This Week in PlayStation! 7/8/14

As the threat of the simian takeover looms its time to dive into this weeks PlayStation News!  Another slow week for news as we are in the lull between E3 and the upcoming Gamescom and TGS conferences in August, as well as this little holiday in the U.S.  However the lead this weeks comes news of the latest PS3 update allowing DS4 controllers to fully function with PS3s now, which means if you need an extra buck to put towards The Last of Us: Remastered maybe its time to trade in the old controllers?

All other news this week is on upcoming game release announcements, all this week focusing on Japanese games coming west and starting with Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star which will release in North America on Sept. 23rd and in the EU on Sept. 26th.  Tales of Hearts R will also be coming west for the PS Vita on November 14th.  Lastly comes some non-specific announcements from NIS America which revealed that The Firefly Diary will be coming to the Vita this fall, while Criminal Girls Invite Only (Vita) and The Awakened Fate Ultimatum (PS3) will be coming some time in 2015.  When specific dates for these releases are announced I will be sure to spread the word!

With all the PS Plus games announced and available at the beginning of the month, there is no longer a need for a weekly section for PS Plus announcements. Is there something you would like to see in this section of the blog weekly? Let me know in the comments!

When the PSN Store is updated the following titles will be available digitally:

In game news a PS3 exclusive Godzilla game was revealed for Japanese audiences, with no word as of yet for a NA/EU release.  Two games also got the same release date announced this week, making August 26th and interesting day indeed as Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 1 (Vita) and inFAMOUS: First Light (PS4) will both be coming to PlayStation audiences.  Rebirth is a Vita remake of a highly touted PS3 JRPG previously unreleased outside of Japan while First Light is standalone DLC focusing on Fetch, a character from the recent inFAMOUS Second Son (PS4) and will not require you to have played or even have Second Son.

This Week in PlayStation (6/23/14)

Well its that time again, after another weak showing of news (post-E3 news is usually slow) its time to wade into the stories of the week.  First up is the news that ten games have been announced for pre-load availability on the PS4, marking a move gamers have been waiting for as select titles will allow you to download the file before the games release, allowing you to play it the moment it is officially released without waiting to buy and download it in its entirety.  The full list can be found in the article linked here.  In other news Sony has also made it easier to port mobile games to the PS Vita/PS TV which means your favorite iOS and Android games could be making their way to Sony’s handheld soon!  In game news we have a couple stories about Destiny.  First up, according to an Amazon listing, the PS4/PS3 exclusives for Destiny are timed exclusives and will be coming to XBone/360 in fall 2015.  No word from Bungie or Activision if that is true however.  The stats for the Destiny Alpha have also coming out, boasting over 6 Million player games and nearly 150 Million Primary Weapon kills.  The entire list of rather impressive numbers can be found here.

In First-Party game news, inFAMOUS: First Light, the stand-alone DLC for inFAMOUS Second Son, has been earmarked for release on the PSN Store for August 26th, though this has not yet been confirmed by Sony or Sucker Punch.  In other news The Last of Us: Remastered has seen a price drop from $59.99 to $49.99, so if you have pre-ordered your copy a refund should be coming your way.

This week sees a plethora of discounts which can be found here, as well as Mutant Mudds Deluxe (Vita) for free!  Keep in mind that next week is the first Tuesday of July, which means new PS Plus games.  It will also mean the introduction of the new format which will see all free games available all month long starting next Tuesday, so look out for an update on what will be free later this week.

This Week in PlayStation (6/17/14)

Considering the fact that the entirety of the video games journalism industry has gone in depth with the games and announcements of E3 it is no surprise that there have been very few news stories since last Monday, so let us dive right in.  Bungie has revealed what the PlayStation exclusives will be for their upcoming game Destiny.  PS3 and PS4 players will get a unique three player co-op strike mission as well as a unique multiplayer map for competitive play.  PS players will also get unique gear for each of the three classes in Destiny as well as exclusive guns and three unique ships!  While no release date has yet been given Payday 2: Crimewave Edition has been confirmed for release on PS4 and XBone. Lastly, fresh off the announcement of LittleBigPlanet 3 at last weeks conference is the confirmation that it will be heading to PS3 as well, so have no fear last-gen players, you can still have more Sackboy!

This weeks free game is for Vita users with the 2D sidescroller/crafter Terraria coming for PS Plus subscribers.  The game is cross-save with the PS3 version so if you have it on PS3 you can carry your save on the road with you while you play on the Vita!  There are also several discounts to be had as PSN has two sales and a handful of other games discounted for PS Plus subscribers, all sale info can be found here.

Destiny First-Look Alpha, Impressions

To some of you who jumped on it quickly you may have received a code to join this weekend’s Destiny First-Look Alpha event.  I was one of the fortunate ones who got a code, and let me tell you face first, I like it, but I don’t love it.  Now granted this is just the Alpha, and there is likely a lot of stuff that is locked or unavailable, but I did get to spend some time running around Old Russia and playing a touch of story.  At first glance its easy to say that this game is beautiful, and playing on the PS4 may be part of it but the Bungie is a great team known for doing great work so it doesn’t surprise me to know that the sights and sounds of Destiny are first-rate.  The story and free roam portions were interesting to explore, and I love having Peter Dinklage (Tyrion, Bolivar Trask) as my guide… my Cortana you might say.  The shooting is fairly standard fair, and the enemies are varied and interesting enough that I never got bored of playing. However it doesn’t seem to grab me, which may just be me, may just be the Alpha-version of this game.  I didn’t find myself needing to continue playing it over something else and in fact I did take a break from playing for other games.  This small slice of the game does intrigue me however, and I am now looking forward to the Beta in order to get a broader sense of the game and see what the game looks like then.  While some have said that Destiny is ‘a non-exclusive Halo’ they may be true, as the only comparison I have is gameplay videos and Red vs Blue however I cannot really compare the two games, except to say that the setting for this Alpha is on Earth, even if there are moments where you are in space.  Overall I’m interested to see more, but right now this is not a ‘must-buy’ for me.

Assassin’s Creed Unity – E3 Discussion

To anyone who watched E3, Assassin’s Creed Unity was one of the heavily featured games which was previewed in not one but two conferences, for Microsoft and Ubisoft.  The biggest reveal at E3 was the four player co-op mode which they showed off during Microsoft’s conference first. With this mode the players shown pulled off quite the daring assassination… or at least were a major cause of someones death as the gameplay showed the players tossing the target out of the window to the angry mob below which finished the job.

To those not terribly familiar with the game itself Assassin’s Creed Unity is the newest installment in the AC series.  It is set in France during the French Revolution, and is (so far) next-gen only.  While Ubisoft has stated they do have something in the works for XB360/PS3 owners (heavily rumored to be called Assassin’s Creed Comet) there has been no word as of yet what those plans truly entail and with the November release date for ACU looming it is interesting to note that nothing has been said yet.  Whether or not Ubisoft plans to wait until Gamescom in August is yet to be seen, but that may be too late to boost sales up for the last-gen game if it is set to hit the same release window as ACU.

On a last note, ACU’s single player was shown off during the Ubisoft conference and while it followed the player traversing the world on the hunt for his target it was notable to see how many different “side missions” they skipped in order to complete the demo.  It is also worth noting that in both demos there was a mass of people on the streets partaking in several actions whether it be looting, murdering or just rioting.  ACU seems set to be the most ambitious game in the AC series, and looks to be working with the capabilities of the next-gen consoles to bring a truly awesome experience!

PlayStation E3 2014 Conference discussion

Hello avid PlayStation fans!  E3 is here and yesterday was a gamer’s day to make a Christmas wishlist with previews and announcements of all the games coming for the next couple of years.  Focusing on PlayStation’s conference however it started out strong with a preview of Destiny and ended strong with a teaser for Uncharted, revealing the official title of Uncharted 4: A Thieve’s End.  Overall the conference was pretty good for me, I can personally say that I cheered a few times at some of the titles that PlayStation were able to get for exclusives, including a Grim Fandango remastering, the newest title from developer From Software, Bloodborne and the new game from Suda51 Let It Die.  The weaker points of the conference were the moments where they dived away from games to talk about Powers coming to PlayStation (which I am excited for) as well as a preview for the upcoming Ratchet & Clank movie and the brief touch on Project Morpheus, PlayStation’s venture into VR.  Overall I think Sony had a strong conference, however I do think that Microsoft had a slightly stronger focus with their press conference yesterday focusing completely on games while Sony was a bit varied.  Everything I saw only made me more excited for the future though, and that is a great thing for gamers as we go forward with this newest generation of consoles.  Let me know in the comments below what you thought, and keep coming back for further discussions as the week goes on!
